About This Tool
Adding your name and date to a photo is a common requirement for passport applications, university admissions, job applications, visa forms, and government IDs. UseToolify's Add Name & Date to Photo tool lets you do this entirely in your browser — no software to install, no account required, and your photos never leave your device.
After uploading your image, you choose the output size: keep the original dimensions, resize to the standard US Passport 2×2 inch format, or the India Passport 3.5×4.5 cm size. You can also enter any custom pixel dimensions for specific institutional requirements.
The tool provides two independent text layers: one for your name and one for the date. For each layer, you can choose from 8 font families, adjust font size, pick any color using the color picker, toggle bold and italic styles, and set text alignment. The date field is pre-filled with today's date for convenience.
Positioning is intuitive: simply drag the text directly on the canvas to place it exactly where you want. The preview updates live as you type or change styles. When you're happy with the result, click "Download Photo" to save a full-resolution PNG encoded directly from the Canvas API — the download resolution matches your selected size, not the preview size.
Beyond passport photos, this tool is great for creating personalized gifts, adding watermarks, dating family photos, or meeting the text requirements for any photo-based document. Everything is processed client-side using the HTML5 Canvas API, ensuring complete privacy.

Yes — drag any text label directly on the canvas to reposition it, or it defaults to the bottom-center of the photo.
Which photo sizes are supported?
You can keep the original size, choose US Passport (2×2 in at 300 DPI), India Passport (3.5×4.5 cm), or enter a custom pixel size.
What font styles are available?
You can choose from 8 font families (Arial, Georgia, Times New Roman, Courier New, Verdana, Trebuchet MS, Impact, Comic Sans MS), adjust font size, color, bold, and italic.
Can I add more than one text label?
Yes — there are two separate layers: "Name" and "Date". You can edit each one independently.

How to add a name and date to a photo
Some forms and notices ask for a photograph that carries the applicant's name and a date, and plenty of people simply want a caption on a picture. This tool puts two text labels on your photo, one for the name and one for the date, and lets you drag them where you want, change the font, size, colour and alignment, and save the finished image.
You can keep the photo at its original size or place it on a fixed canvas such as 3.5 x 4.5 cm at 300 DPI. Both choices behave differently in ways that matter, particularly around stretching and text size, so the notes below cover them before you download.
Step by step
- Click the upload area or drop a photo (JPG, PNG or WebP). The photo appears on a canvas with two labels: the name near the bottom, and below it the date.
- Open 'Photo Size' and choose 'Original Size', '2x2 in (US Passport)' (600 x 600 px), '3.5x4.5 cm (India)' (413 x 531 px) or 'Custom' with width and height from 50 to 3000 px.
- Select the name or date tab under 'Text Layers'. Type into 'Name Text' or 'Date Text'. The date box starts filled with today's date in a style like 11 Oct 2026, and you can edit it.
- Adjust the layer with Font (eight choices), Size (8 to 200), Color, the B and I buttons and the left, centre and right alignment buttons. Text defaults to white with a soft dark shadow so it stays readable.
- Drag a label on the photo to move it. Then click 'Download Photo' to save photo-with-name.png.
When this is useful
- Preparing a photograph with the candidate's name and date of capture where a form asks for one.
- Labelling event or site photos with a caption and a date for records.
- Adding a name tag to a picture for a school file, an album or a presentation.
- Putting a quick credit or watermark-style label on your own pictures.
Worked example: A 4000-pixel photo with the default text size
In Original Size the preview is shrunk to 960 px wide (scale 960 / 4000 = 0.24) but the saved file is 4000 px wide. The name is set to 28 px, which fills about 2.9 percent of the preview's width as a height unit (28 / 960) but only 0.7 percent in the file (28 / 4000). To make the saved text look like the preview, multiply the size by 4000 / 960, about 4.17: the name becomes around 117 px and the 22 px date becomes about 92 px. With a fixed canvas such as 413 x 531 px, preview and file are the same size and no adjustment is needed.
Tips for better results
- Use a text colour that contrasts with the part of the photo it sits on, such as white on a dark shirt or black on a light wall.
- Keep labels inside the frame with a little margin; text dragged against an edge can be cut off.
- If a form dictates the font size or position of the text, follow its description and move the labels by dragging until it matches.
- Convert or compress the PNG afterwards if the destination wants a JPEG or a KB limit; this tool only outputs PNG.
Common mistakes
- Using a fixed size with a photo of a different shape. The picture is stretched to fill the canvas, not cropped, so faces look distorted. Crop the photo to the right shape first, or use Original Size.
- Keeping Original Size on a large photo and not checking the text in the result. The on-screen preview is scaled down to at most 960 px wide, but the download is drawn at full resolution with the same font size number, so the text can look far smaller in the file than on screen. Raise the size to compensate.
- Leaving today's date when the photo was taken on another day. The date box is pre-filled automatically; enter the real date if the form calls for the date of the photo.
- Choosing a thin or decorative font at a small size. It may blur once printed or compressed.
Your files and privacy
The photo is read with the browser's file reader and drawn on a canvas, and the PNG is created on your device, so the picture is not uploaded. The page sends an anonymous usage event (tool name and a random session ID) when it opens, but nothing from your image or the text you type.
Frequently asked questions
Can I move the name and date wherever I like?
Yes. Drag either label on the photo. By default the name sits near the bottom, centred, with the date just underneath.
Which photo sizes can I choose?
Original Size, 2x2 in (600 x 600 px), 3.5x4.5 cm (413 x 531 px), or a custom width and height between 50 and 3000 pixels.
Does it crop my picture to the chosen size?
No, it stretches the whole picture to fit. If the photo has a different shape from the size you select, crop it beforehand to avoid distortion.
What file do I get?
A PNG named photo-with-name.png. It is not compressed to a KB limit, so use another tool if a form needs a specific file size.
Can I add more than two labels?
No. There are exactly two layers, Name and Date, though you can type anything you like in either, so one can serve as a caption.
Does the tool prove the date a photo was taken?
No. It prints whatever text you enter. The date box simply starts with today's date, so replace it with the correct one when it matters.
