Password Strength Checker
Instantly check how strong your password is — see entropy, estimated crack time, and a detailed security checklist.
How to Use
- 1. Type or paste your password in the input field.
- 2. The strength bar, entropy, and crack time update in real-time.
- 3. Review the checklist to see which security criteria your password meets.
- 4. Use the eye button to toggle password visibility.
- 5. Aim for at least 60 bits of entropy and a "Strong" or "Very Strong" rating.
About This Tool
This Password Strength Checker evaluates your password in real-time, giving you instant feedback on its security level. The analysis runs entirely in your browser — your password is never sent to any server or stored anywhere.
The strength score is calculated based on 5 factors: length, character variety (uppercase, lowercase, numbers, symbols), and absence of repetitive patterns. Each factor contributes to the overall score, displayed as a color-coded bar from Very Weak (red) to Very Strong (green).
Entropy is the most mathematically precise measure of password strength. It's calculated based on the character pool size and password length: entropy = length × log₂(pool size). A 12-character password using all character types has about 79 bits of entropy — considered very strong.
The crack time estimate assumes an attacker using modern GPU hardware attempting 1 billion guesses per second. Modern password hashing algorithms like bcrypt, scrypt, or Argon2 slow this down dramatically — but not all sites use them. Aim for passwords that would take centuries to crack.
The 7-point security checklist covers: minimum length (8 characters), recommended length (12 characters), uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, special characters, and the absence of repeating character patterns (like "aaa"). Meeting all 7 criteria significantly reduces the risk of your password being cracked.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes a password strong?
A strong password is long (12+ characters), uses a mix of uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols, and doesn't contain dictionary words or personal information. The most important factor is length.
What is password entropy?
Entropy measures the unpredictability of a password in bits. Higher entropy means more possible combinations. A password with 60+ bits of entropy is considered strong for most purposes.
How is crack time estimated?
Crack time is estimated based on entropy and assumes an attacker is trying 1 billion passwords per second using modern GPU hardware. Real crack times vary based on the attacker's resources.
Does this tool store my password?
No. Your password is analyzed entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing is sent to any server. Close the tab and all data is gone.
Should I use a password manager?
Yes. Password managers let you use a unique, strong password for every site without memorizing them. Popular options include Bitwarden (free, open-source), 1Password, and KeePass.
