Matrix Calculator
Add, subtract, multiply matrices, find transpose and determinant.
How to Use
- Step 1: Choose the matrix size (2×2, 3×3, 2×3, or 3×2).
- Step 2: Select an operation: addition, subtraction, multiplication, transpose, or determinant.
- Step 3: Enter values in Matrix A (and B for binary operations). The result updates instantly.
About Matrix Calculator
Matrices are rectangular arrays of numbers used throughout science, engineering, computer graphics, and machine learning. This calculator supports the most common matrix operations: element-wise addition and subtraction, matrix multiplication, transposition, and determinant computation.
Matrix addition and subtraction require the same dimensions. Multiplication requires the columns of A to match the rows of B — here both matrices share the same size. Transposition flips the matrix, converting an m×n matrix to an n×m matrix. The determinant (for square matrices only) is computed via Laplace cofactor expansion for 2×2 and 3×3 sizes.
All computations are performed in pure TypeScript in your browser with no external libraries. Results are displayed as a formatted matrix grid for easy reading.

Frequently Asked Questions
What operations are supported?
Addition, subtraction, multiplication, transpose of A, and determinant of A (square matrices only).
Why can't I multiply any two matrices?
Matrix multiplication requires the number of columns in A to equal the number of rows in B. Currently A and B share the same size selection.
How is the determinant calculated?
For 2×2: ad−bc. For 3×3: Laplace cofactor expansion.
What does transpose mean?
Transposing a matrix flips it along its diagonal — rows become columns and columns become rows.
Can I enter decimal values?
Yes — all matrix cells accept any real number including decimals and negatives.
