About the Hours Calculator

The Hours Calculator helps employees, freelancers, and managers quickly determine how many hours were worked in a shift and compute the corresponding gross pay. It handles the most common payroll calculation scenario: a single daily shift with an optional unpaid break.

Decimal hours (e.g. 7.5 hours instead of 7 hours 30 minutes) are shown alongside the hours:minutes format because many payroll systems require decimal input. The formula is straightforward: total minutes worked divided by 60.

Overnight shifts (where end time is earlier than start time, e.g. 10 PM to 6 AM) are handled automatically by assuming the shift crosses midnight, adding 24 hours to the end time before calculating.

The gross pay calculation multiplies decimal hours by the hourly rate. Note: this is gross pay only — taxes, deductions, and overtime rules are not applied. Always verify with your employer's payroll system for final figures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this handle overnight shifts? expand_more

This tool calculates a single shift. Add up each day manually or use a spreadsheet for weekly timesheets.

What is decimal hours format? expand_more
