About the PDF Text Extractor
Our free PDF text extractor uses the industry-standard PDF.js library — the same technology powering Firefox's built-in PDF viewer — to parse and extract text from your PDF documents entirely in your browser. There is no server upload, no cloud processing, and no data ever leaves your device.
PDFs store text in two main ways: as actual searchable text (in which case our tool extracts it perfectly) or as rasterized images (scanned pages). For image-based PDFs, you may see a "No readable text found" notice — this is expected, as extracting text from images requires OCR (optical character recognition), a separate process.
The extracted text preserves the logical reading order as stored in the PDF. Complex multi-column layouts or tables may not perfectly reflect their visual arrangement, but all text content will be present. The tool works with PDFs of any length and displays results page-by-page for easy navigation.
Typical use cases include: copying quotes or citations from academic papers, extracting data from invoices or reports, converting ebook content to plain text, or preparing PDF content for further editing or translation. Our tool handles all standard PDF versions and common encodings.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. The entire extraction process runs in your browser using PDF.js. Your file never leaves your device.
Why does a page show "No readable text found"?
That page is likely a scanned image or contains only graphics. Scanned PDFs need OCR to extract text, which this tool does not perform.
What file size limit is there?
There is no hard limit — your browser memory is the only constraint. PDFs up to 100MB typically work fine on modern devices.
Can I extract text from password-protected PDFs?
Not directly. You would need to unlock the PDF first using our Unlock PDF tool, then extract the text.
Does it support multi-language PDFs?
Yes. Text in any language encoded in the PDF (including CJK, Arabic, Cyrillic, etc.) will be extracted as long as the PDF stores it as text.

How to extract text from a PDF
Many PDFs carry their words as real text, which is why you can search them or select a line with the cursor. This tool reads that text layer page by page and lists it so you can copy one page, copy everything, or save it as a plain text file. It helps when you need a paragraph for an email or figures for a spreadsheet and the PDF will not let you select them cleanly.
There is one limit to know first. The tool does not do OCR. A scanned document or a photo saved as PDF is only pictures of text, with no text layer, so those pages come back with a No readable text found message. For a scan you need a separate OCR tool.
Step by step
- Drop a PDF onto the upload area or click to browse. Other file types are rejected with a message.
- Wait while the status reads Extracting text from PDF.
- Check the summary bar, which shows the number of pages, words and characters found.
- Scroll through the page cards. Each is labelled Page 1, Page 2 and so on, with a word count and a Copy button. A page without text says it may be an image or scanned content.
- Use Copy All for the whole text, or Download .txt to save it under the PDF's name with -text added. New File clears the screen.
When this is useful
- Quoting clauses from a contract in an email without retyping them.
- Copying statement text into a spreadsheet for cleaning.
- Pasting a research paper into notes or a translation tool.
- Checking quickly whether a PDF has a text layer or is only a scanned image.
Worked example: A three-page invoice file
Page 1 holds "Invoice No. 2026-117 Date 04 Oct 2026 Total Rs 11,800", which is 10 words and 53 characters. Page 2 holds "Thank you for your business. Payment due within 15 days.", another 10 words and 56 characters. Page 3 is a photographed stamp. The summary bar reads 3 pages, 20 words and 109 chars, and Page 3 shows No readable text found. Download .txt saves the first two pages' text separated by a blank line.
Tips for better results
- Use a page's own Copy button when you need only a section.
- The totals are a quick test. A 40-page file reporting almost no words is probably a scan.
- Expect to tidy the output. Text pieces are joined with single spaces, so line and paragraph breaks inside a page are not kept.
- For tables, paste into a spreadsheet and split by spaces; column alignment is not preserved.
Common mistakes
- Treating a scan result as a failure. The tool worked; there was simply no text layer. Use OCR first.
- Trusting the text unchecked. Unusual font encodings can give odd characters and multi-column pages can read out of order, so compare a few lines with the PDF.
- Expecting layout. Headings, bullets and tables are flattened into running text.
- Loading a password-protected PDF. The tool will say it could not extract text. Open it with the password and save an unprotected copy where you are allowed to.
Your files and privacy
Text is read inside your browser with the PDF.js library, whose worker file is served from this site, and the document is not uploaded. The only network call is a small usage ping with the tool name and an anonymous session ID when the page opens.
Frequently asked questions
Does this tool do OCR on scanned PDFs?
No. It reads only text already embedded in the file. Scanned pages are images, so they show as having no readable text.
How can I tell if my PDF is scanned?
Try selecting a word in a PDF viewer. If you can only drag a box over the page, it is an image. Running it here also shows it, because pages without text are marked.
Are line breaks and formatting kept?
No. Text items are merged with single spaces, so each page appears as one block. Pages are separated by a blank line in Copy All and the downloaded file.
Can it extract Hindi or other Indian-language text?
If the PDF stores it as real text, often yes, though complex scripts can come out with ordering or spacing problems depending on how the file was made.
What do the word and character counts mean?
Words are space-separated runs of text on each page. Characters are the length of the extracted text across all pages, not counting the blank lines added between pages.
