Frequently Asked Questions

What is WCAG color contrast?
WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) defines minimum contrast ratios for text. AA requires 4.5:1 for normal text (3:1 for large text), AAA requires 7:1 for normal text.
What is the contrast ratio formula?
Contrast ratio = (L1 + 0.05) / (L2 + 0.05), where L1 is the relative luminance of the lighter color and L2 the darker. Luminance is calculated from linearized sRGB values.
Who needs accessible color contrast?
Accessible contrast is important for users with low vision, color blindness, or viewing screens in bright sunlight. WCAG AA compliance is legally required in many jurisdictions for public-facing websites.
Does this check large text differently?
This tool shows colors passing the 4.5:1 threshold (AA for normal text). Large text (18pt or 14pt bold) only requires 3:1. For large text, you'll have even more color options.
