About Our Background Blur Tool

Background blur — also known as the bokeh effect — is the artistic technique of keeping a subject sharp while softly blurring the surrounding environment. Traditionally, this was only possible with professional DSLR cameras equipped with wide-aperture lenses (f/1.4, f/1.8), requiring expensive gear and technical expertise. Our free online tool brings the same effect to everyone, instantly.

UseToolify's Blur Background tool uses MediaPipe Selfie Segmentation, a state-of-the-art Google AI model that runs entirely within your browser using WebAssembly. This means your photos are never uploaded to any server. The model generates a precise pixel-level mask that instantly separates the foreground subject from the background in real time.

For Gaussian blur, the tool applies a Gaussian kernel convolution over the background pixels — averaging neighboring pixels weighted by a normal distribution curve. This produces smooth, organic softness that closely mimics a camera's natural depth-of-field optical blur. Motion blur simulates the streaking effect of camera or subject movement, averaging pixels along a directional path to create a dynamic, energetic feel.

The blur intensity slider controls the blur radius in pixels. A low value (1–5px) produces a subtle, professional depth-of-field look, while a higher value (15–25px) creates an exaggerated, artistic bokeh. The segmentation mask composites the sharp foreground back over the blurred background using HTML5 Canvas, giving you a polished final image downloadable instantly as a lossless PNG.

Common use cases include: LinkedIn headshots and professional profile photos, Instagram portraits, Zoom profile pictures and virtual backgrounds, ecommerce product photos where you want to remove a distracting backdrop, dating app profile pictures, and real estate photography. Whether you're a marketer, content creator, job seeker, or social media enthusiast, our tool delivers studio-quality results — no design software or skills required.

Once you're happy with your blurred background, use our Image Resize Tool to adjust the dimensions of your final photo for any platform.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does automatic background detection work?

The tool uses MediaPipe Selfie Segmentation — a Google AI model — running entirely inside your browser. It analyzes each pixel of your photo and generates a segmentation mask that identifies the main subject (person or object) versus the background. This happens instantly on your device, with no data ever sent to a server.

What is the difference between Gaussian and Motion blur?

Gaussian blur applies a smooth, radial softness to the background — similar to the bokeh effect achieved by a DSLR camera with a wide-aperture lens. It looks natural and photographic. Motion blur simulates directional movement by smearing pixels along a path, creating an energetic, dynamic look popular in sports and artistic photography.

Will the blur look natural on my photo?

Yes, especially with Gaussian blur. The AI segmentation creates precise subject-background boundaries, and the Gaussian convolution produces smooth, photographic-looking softness. For best results, use a photo with a clearly defined subject against a distinct background and keep the blur intensity at a moderate level (5–12px).

Can I control the strength of the blur?

Yes. After the AI processes your photo, a slider lets you control the blur radius in pixels. Drag it left for a subtle, professional depth-of-field look, or right for a heavier, more artistic effect. The canvas updates in real time so you can preview the result before downloading.

Does the tool work on group photos or non-people subjects?

The MediaPipe model is optimized for people and selfies, so it works best on portrait photos — including group shots with multiple people. For non-person subjects like products or pets, results may vary depending on how visually distinct the subject is from the background. Photos with clear contrast between subject and background tend to yield the best results.

Is my photo uploaded to any server?

Absolutely not. All image processing — AI segmentation, blur computation, and canvas compositing — happens 100% inside your browser using WebAssembly and the Canvas API. Your photos never leave your device, so your privacy is fully protected at all times.

Guide

How to blur the background of a photo and keep the subject sharp

This tool separates a person from the background automatically, blurs only the background and lays the sharp subject back on top. Choose Gaussian, which resembles soft camera bokeh, or Motion, which smears the background sideways. A slider sets the strength from 1 to 25 pixels.

Separation uses MediaPipe Selfie Segmentation, a small Google model built for people and selfies. It works best on portraits, while pets or products depend on how clearly they stand out. There is no manual brush.

Step by step

  1. Open the page and wait while the upload area says Loading AI model. The model loads when the page opens, not when you add a photo.
  2. Drop a photo on the box labelled Drop your photo here, or click it to browse. Only JPEG, PNG and WebP are accepted; anything else shows an error.
  3. Wait for Analyzing image. The processed picture and its controls then appear.
  4. Under Blur Filter, choose Gaussian or Motion. The picture updates straight away.
  5. Drag the slider, labelled Blur with a value in pixels. The default is 8 and the range is 1 to 25.
  6. Press Download PNG to save blur-background-toolify.png, or Try Another Image to start over.

When this is useful

  • Tidying a profile portrait taken in a messy room or a busy street.
  • Softening a crowded background in a wedding or festival photo.
  • Making a person stand out in a thumbnail or poster.
  • Giving a phone portrait a shallow depth-of-field look without editing software.
  • Adding a sense of speed behind a runner or cyclist with Motion.

Worked example: A 1080 x 1350 portrait with Gaussian 8

You upload a 1080 x 1350 pixel portrait. The model builds a mask of the person, the tool blurs a copy of the whole photo by 8 pixels, then draws the sharp person over it. The download is a PNG of exactly 1080 x 1350 pixels. Switching to Motion at 20 draws the background 30 times, shifted between minus 10 and plus 9.3 pixels sideways, a streak about 20 pixels wide.

Tips for better results

  • The slider counts real pixels on the full-resolution photo. 8 pixels is obvious on a 1000 pixel wide picture but subtle on a 4000 pixel phone photo, where even 25 is mild. Shrink very large photos first for a stronger look.
  • Subjects with a clear gap from the background, good light and a plain outline segment best.
  • Motion blur only moves pixels left and right.
  • Use Motion for photos with a sense of movement, such as a runner or a passing vehicle, and Gaussian for portraits where you want a soft, even background.

Common mistakes

  • Expecting an exact cutout of objects. The model is trained for people, so a bottle or bicycle may be blurred with the background.
  • Using a very large photo at a low slider value and concluding nothing happened. Raise the value or reduce the photo size.
  • Assuming the blur follows distance. The whole background gets the same blur, so this is not a true depth-of-field simulation.
  • Uploading the PNG to a site with a small file limit. It keeps the original pixel size and can be several megabytes, so convert it to JPG if needed.
  • Choosing the same file again through Try Another Image. Some browsers report no change, so pick a different file or reload.

Your files and privacy

Your photo is processed in your browser and is not uploaded. The segmentation model and its WebAssembly files are served from usetoolify.com itself, not a third-party CDN, and download to your device when the page opens, a few megabytes in total. The page also records that the tool was opened, with an anonymous session identifier.

Frequently asked questions

Does this download an AI model from a CDN?

No. The model files are bundled with the site and fetched from the same domain when the page opens. After loading, segmentation runs on your device.

What is the difference between Gaussian and Motion?

Gaussian applies a smooth blur in all directions. Motion draws the background several times with small horizontal shifts to create a streak. Gaussian suits portraits, Motion suits action shots.

Why did it blur part of my subject?

The model decides the foreground from the picture alone. Low contrast, dark clothing against a dark wall, or non-human subjects can confuse it. Try a photo with clearer separation.

Can I choose the area to keep sharp myself?

No, there is no brush or selection tool. For a custom area, use a manual editor.

What file do I get?

A PNG at the same pixel size as your upload, named blur-background-toolify.png. PNG avoids compression loss, but the file can be much larger than the original JPG.
