About the Age Calculator

Calculating exact age in years, months, and days requires careful handling of months with different lengths and leap years. A naive subtraction gives the wrong result near month boundaries — for example, from January 31 to March 1 is not exactly one month.

This calculator uses the correct algorithm: subtract years, then months, then days, borrowing from the higher unit when the difference goes negative. The "as of" date defaults to today but can be set to any date — useful for checking what someone's age was on a historical date.

The "next birthday" count helps with party planning and gift preparation. The total days and weeks figures are fun to share and also useful for medical age calculations where gestational or postnatal age is measured in days or weeks.

All calculations run in the browser with JavaScript Date objects. Leap years and varying month lengths are handled by the native date arithmetic.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the calculator handle leap years? expand_more

JavaScript Date objects automatically handle leap years and varying month lengths in the arithmetic.

Can I calculate age at a past or future date? expand_more

Yes — change the "As of Date" field to any date. This calculates what your age was or will be on that day.

Why does my age sometimes show 0 months 30 days? expand_more

This is correct — when the month count rounds down, the remaining days can be close to a full month.

Does this work for babies under 1 year? expand_more

Yes — the result will show 0 years, and the months and days count from birth.

Is my birthday data stored? expand_more

No — all calculations run locally in the browser. Nothing is sent to any server.

How to find your exact age in years, months and days

This calculator takes two dates, a Date of Birth and an As Of Date, and works out the gap as calendar years, months and days. The As Of Date fills itself with today's date from your device, so a birth date alone is enough. Under the main result sit three smaller figures: total days, total whole weeks, and the days remaining until the next birthday.

People use it to check an admission cut-off, fill a form that asks for age as on a particular date, count a baby's age in weeks, or see how far away a retirement age is. Because the As Of Date is editable, it answers both 'how old am I today' and 'how old will I be on 1 April 2030'. It is a date-arithmetic aid, not an official proof of age.

Step by step

  1. Click the Date of Birth field and choose the date from the picker, or type it in the format your browser's date field expects.
  2. Look at the As Of Date field. It starts as today. Leave it for your current age, or change it to a reference date such as the last day of an admission year.
  3. Read the large panel labelled Your Age, for example '31 years, 1 months, 17 days'.
  4. Check the three tiles under it: Total Days, Total Weeks and Next Birthday (in days).
  5. If a red message asks for a valid birth date before the 'as of' date, the birth date is later than the As Of Date. Correct whichever one is wrong.

When this is useful

  • Working out age as on a fixed cut-off date for a school admission or entrance form.
  • Tracking a baby's age in weeks and days for check-ups.
  • Counting the days to a birthday for planning a party or a trip.
  • Finding out how old someone was on a past date, such as at a family event.

Worked example: Born 24 August 1995, checked on 11 October 2026

Enter 1995-08-24 as the Date of Birth and 2026-10-11 as the As Of Date. The tool shows 31 years, 1 months, 17 days: 31 full years to 24 August 2026, one more month to 24 September, then 17 days to 11 October. Total Days reads 11,371, Total Weeks reads 1,624 (11,371 divided by 7, dropping the remainder), and Next Birthday reads 317 days, counting to 24 August 2027.

Tips for better results

  • For a form that says 'age as on 1 July', change only the As Of Date, not the birth date.
  • Type the year carefully. 1895 instead of 1985 produces a believable but wrong answer.
  • Total Days is a plain difference between the two dates, so it is the figure to trust if the months-and-days look odd.
  • For a future date such as a retirement age, set the As Of Date forward; Next Birthday then counts from that date.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting that As Of Date defaults to today. Open the page on another day and the result moves. Set the date explicitly when you need a repeatable answer.
  • Expecting a month-end birthday to land on a matching date every month. A 31 January birthday counts its whole months to 28 or 29 February, so on 1 March 2026 someone born on 31 January 2000 is 26 years, 1 month and 1 day old.
  • Assuming a 29 February birthday behaves the same everywhere. For 29 February 2004 the tool shows '22 years, 0 months, 0 days' on 28 February 2026, so it treats the last day of February as the anniversary in non-leap years. Some forms count from 1 March instead; follow the rule that applies to you.
  • Forgetting that Next Birthday counts from the As Of Date, not from today. Change the As Of Date and the countdown changes with it; on the birthday itself it shows 0 days.

Your files and privacy

The age arithmetic runs in your browser, and the dates you pick are not sent to a server or saved. When the page opens, the site does record that this tool was opened: a request carries the tool name and a random anonymous session ID kept in your browser, and a Google Analytics event is also sent. Neither includes your birth date.

Frequently asked questions

How does it count months when the birth day does not exist in a month?

It counts whole months from the birth date first, then the leftover days. When the birth date is the 29th, 30th or 31st and a month is shorter, that month ends on its last day, so the result never shows negative days. Dates are read as calendar dates, so the answer does not depend on your time zone.

Why does another calculator give a different months-and-days figure?

There is no universal rule for 'one month' when month lengths differ, so tools disagree by a day or two at month ends. Total Days agrees everywhere, because it is just the number of days between the two dates.

Can I calculate my age at a future date?

Yes. Set the As Of Date to any date after your birth date and the panel shows your age on that day, which suits planning for a retirement age or an eligibility date.

Does the time of birth matter?

No. The fields accept dates only, so everything is measured in whole days.

Can I use the result as proof of age?

No. Official documents such as a birth certificate decide age for legal purposes. Use this tool for planning and quick checks, and confirm the rule an institution applies.
