Understanding Your Typing Speed
Words per minute is measured in "standard words" of five characters, which is why the metric works across languages and word lengths. Only characters you typed correctly are counted, so hammering the keyboard randomly will not inflate the number.
Roughly 40 WPM is typical for an adult computer user. Sustained speeds above 70 are genuinely fast, and professional transcriptionists work beyond 90. But raw speed is the less useful half of the picture: accuracy below about 95% usually means you are spending more time correcting than you saved by rushing.
If you want to improve, the most reliable gain comes from consistency rather than bursts — typing at a speed where you rarely make mistakes, then letting that baseline rise naturally. Looking at the keyboard is the single biggest ceiling on long-term speed.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is WPM calculated?
Using the standard convention: one "word" is five characters. Only correctly typed characters count, and the total is scaled to a full minute — so typing 250 correct characters in 30 seconds gives 100 WPM.
What is a good typing speed?
Around 40 WPM is average for an adult. Regular computer users often reach 60–70, and professional typists commonly exceed 90. Accuracy matters more than raw speed: errors you have to go back and fix cost more time than typing slightly slower.
Do mistakes get counted?
Yes. Incorrect characters are highlighted in red as you type and excluded from your WPM. The accuracy percentage shows the share of characters you got right on the first attempt.
Can I use backspace?
Yes — you can correct mistakes as you go. Characters you fix then count as correct, though the time spent fixing them still affects your final speed.
Is my typing data stored?
No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere. Your best score is remembered only for the current session.
