About PDF Unlocking
PDF files can be protected with a user password (required to open) or an owner password (restricts editing and printing). Our unlock tool removes both types of protection — as long as you provide the correct password.
This tool is intended for legitimate use cases: unlocking your own PDFs, removing protection from files you own, or accessing documents for which you have the password. We do not support brute-force decryption or unauthorized access.
Your PDF is sent over HTTPS to our server, unlocked there, and returned to your browser. The server holds it in a temporary file only while processing and deletes it afterwards; the file and password are not kept.
You may also find our Protect PDF, PDF Metadata Editor, and Merge PDF helpful.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you unlock a PDF without the password?
No. This tool requires the correct password. We do not crack or brute-force passwords.
What if I get "wrong password"?
Double-check for typos, spaces, or case sensitivity. The password is case-sensitive.
Does unlocking reduce PDF quality?
No. Only the encryption layer is removed. The content, images, and layout remain intact.
Is my password secure?
Yes. Passwords are sent over HTTPS and are not kept after the request. They are used only for the current request.

How to remove a password from a PDF you are allowed to open
Banks, employers and government portals often send documents as password-protected PDFs. That protection is sensible in an email, but it becomes a nuisance once you are the legitimate holder and simply want to open the file in any viewer, merge it with other documents or convert it. This tool takes a protected PDF and the password you were given, and returns a copy without the encryption.
Important: use this only for PDFs that you own or are authorised to open. The tool needs you to supply the correct password for any file that asks for one. It does not guess, crack or bypass passwords, and it should not be used to get into a document that belongs to someone else.
Step by step
- Click the upload box or drop your protected PDF onto it. Only PDF files up to 20 MB are accepted.
- Type the password into the field that appears, which is masked as you type. Use the exact password you were given, including capital letters and symbols.
- Press Unlock & Download PDF. The button shows Unlocking while the file is processed.
- On success a green message says PDF unlocked successfully, and the file downloads with -unlocked added to its name, for example statement-unlocked.pdf.
- Open the new file in a normal viewer to confirm that it opens without asking for a password.
When this is useful
- Removing the password from your own salary slip or account statement so you can store it with other records.
- Preparing a protected document for merging, splitting or converting, since some tools here cannot read encrypted files.
- Clearing an old password from a document you created, after you have changed your mind about protecting it.
- Opening a file in a reader that does not support its original encryption.
Worked example: Unlocking a statement you receive each month
Your bank sends bank-statement-sep.pdf, a 3-page statement, protected with a password that its covering email describes. You drop the file onto the tool, type the password and press Unlock & Download PDF. The tool returns bank-statement-sep-unlocked.pdf. You open it, confirm no password prompt appears, and then use Merge PDF to join it with the other months for a loan application. The original file is unchanged.
Tips for better results
- Copy the password from the sender's message instead of retyping it, to avoid mistakes with similar-looking characters.
- Read the covering email or letter carefully. Issuers often explain how the password is built, and those instructions are the right place to look rather than trial and error.
- Keep the original protected file. The unlocked copy is no longer protected, so store and share it with care.
- If you want protection back later, add it again with the Protect PDF tool.
Common mistakes
- Using it without permission. This tool is only for documents you own or are authorised to open, and the right password is required. Do not use it on files that belong to others.
- Getting the password slightly wrong. It is case-sensitive, and stray spaces count. The tool reports a general failure message that asks you to check the password.
- Leaving the field blank on a file that does ask for a password. The blank option is meant for files that open without one, and it will not open a file that needs a password.
- Forgetting that unlocking removes the protection for everyone who holds the copy. Do not email the unlocked file if the original protection was there for a reason.
Your files and privacy
This tool works on our server, not in your browser. Your PDF and the password are sent with the request, the file is briefly written to temporary storage so a decryption program can read it, and it is deleted when processing ends. Do not use the tool for documents or passwords you are not comfortable sending to a server.
Frequently asked questions
Can this remove a password I have forgotten?
No. A file that requires a password to open can only be unlocked if you provide that password. The tool makes no attempt to guess or break passwords. If you have lost it, ask the person or organisation that issued the file.
Is it legal to unlock a PDF?
Removing protection from a document you own, or have permission to open, is ordinary housekeeping. Doing it to someone else's file without permission can breach law or contract. This is general information, not legal advice.
What does leaving the password blank do?
The field note says leaving it blank removes other restrictions on a PDF that is not password-protected, such as limits on printing or editing. Use that only on documents you are entitled to change.
Does unlocking change the content or quality?
The aim is to strip only the encryption layer, so text, images and layout should remain. Open the result and check it before relying on it, as with any converted file.
Why does it say it could not unlock the file?
The message appears for any failure, not just a wrong password. Check the password first; other causes are a damaged file, one over 20 MB, or a temporary server problem.
