Reading a Word Cloud
A word cloud encodes exactly one variable — frequency — as size. That makes it excellent for spotting what a body of text keeps returning to, and poor at anything requiring precision. Two words of similar size may differ noticeably in count, which is why the frequency list beside the canvas shows the actual numbers.
Filtering out function words is what makes the result meaningful. Words like "the", "and", and "of" are the most common in almost any English text, so leaving them in produces a cloud that looks identical whatever the subject. Removing them lets the topic surface.
Placement uses a spiral search outward from the centre: each word is tried at progressively larger radii until it finds a spot that does not overlap anything already placed. The starting angle is randomised, so regenerating reshuffles the arrangement without changing the underlying data.
Common uses: survey responses, customer feedback, meeting transcripts, and checking which terms dominate a draft before publishing it.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is word size decided?
By frequency. The most common word gets the largest size and the rest scale down proportionally, so the visual weight of a word matches how often it appears.
Why are words like "the" and "and" excluded?
They are function words that appear constantly regardless of topic, so including them produces a cloud that says nothing about the actual subject. You can switch the filter off if you want the raw counts.
Why do some words sit sideways?
Rotating a portion of the words lets the layout pack more tightly and fill the canvas more evenly. Turn rotation off if you want everything horizontal and easier to read.
Why does the layout change each time?
Placement uses a spiral search with a random starting angle, so regenerating gives a different arrangement of the same data. Keep clicking until you get one you like.
Is my text uploaded?
No. Counting and rendering both happen in your browser, so you can safely paste private notes, feedback, or transcripts.
