About the PDF Metadata Editor

PDF metadata (also called document properties or XMP metadata) is information embedded in the PDF file that describes the document without being part of its visible content. Every PDF can store a Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator (the app that made the original), and Producer (the PDF engine that wrote it).

Our tool reads and writes these fields using pdf-lib, a pure JavaScript PDF library that runs entirely in your browser. No file is ever uploaded — the entire read-edit-save cycle happens on your device. This makes it safe for confidential business or legal documents.

Editing PDF metadata is useful for: correcting auto-generated titles when converting Word documents to PDF, adding author attribution to shared documents, improving PDF discoverability in search engines and document management systems, and ensuring consistency when distributing documents professionally.

The Keywords field accepts comma-separated values. Other viewers and search tools may use these keywords to index and find your document. The Creator and Producer fields are informational — you can clear them for privacy or set them to reflect your toolchain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does editing metadata change the PDF content?

No. Only the hidden properties (title, author, etc.) are changed. The pages, text, images, and formatting remain untouched.

Is my PDF uploaded to any server?

Never. The entire process uses pdf-lib in your browser. Your file stays on your device throughout.

Can I clear the Creator and Producer fields for privacy?

Yes. Simply clear those fields and save. The output PDF will have empty creator/producer properties.

Does it work on password-protected PDFs?

Partially — the tool can read and edit open-access metadata from some encrypted PDFs, but you may need to unlock the PDF first.

Will the output file be larger or smaller?

Negligibly different — metadata fields are tiny compared to the content. File size changes will be less than a few kilobytes.
