About the Grayscale PDF Converter

Converting a PDF to grayscale removes all color information and replaces it with shades of gray, making it ideal for black-and-white printing, reducing ink costs, accessibility requirements, and archiving. Our tool uses PDF.js to render each page to a canvas at 2x resolution, then applies the luminance formula to convert each pixel (gray = 0.299R + 0.587G + 0.114B). The result is reassembled into a new PDF using pdf-lib.

The luminance formula (ITU-R BT.601) weights the green channel most heavily because the human eye is most sensitive to green light. This produces perceptually accurate grayscale images that look natural rather than flat.

Common use cases include: printing color reports in black and white without ink waste, meeting accessibility standards for documents that need grayscale versions, reducing file transfer overhead for documents viewed on e-ink readers, and preparing PDFs for photocopying or fax transmission.

Note that the output PDF consists of rasterized page images — the text will not be searchable in the output. For text-heavy documents, consider extracting the text separately before converting. Password-protected PDFs should be unlocked first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the text remain selectable in the output?

No. The output is a rasterized image-based PDF. Text is rendered as pixels and cannot be selected or copied.

Is my PDF uploaded to any server?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using PDF.js and pdf-lib. Your file never leaves your device.

Will the file size increase?

It may. Rasterized PDFs can be larger than text-based PDFs, especially for high-resolution output. We use JPEG compression at 85% to keep sizes reasonable.

Can I convert password-protected PDFs?

No. Unlock the PDF first using our Unlock PDF tool, then convert it to grayscale.

What formula is used for grayscale conversion?

We use the ITU-R BT.601 luminance formula: gray = 0.299×R + 0.587×G + 0.114×B. This closely matches how the human eye perceives brightness.
