About This Tool
Adding page numbers to a PDF might sound simple, but the details matter enormously — does the number go on every page or only some? Should it say "1" or "Page 1 of 24"? What font, size, and color match the document's design? UseToolify's Add Page Numbers to PDF tool answers all of these questions without requiring you to install Adobe Acrobat or upload sensitive documents to an unknown server.
The tool is powered by pdf-lib, a zero-dependency JavaScript library for reading and writing PDFs in the browser. When you click Download, pdf-lib opens your file, embeds a standard PDF font (Helvetica, Times Roman, or Courier), and draws a text layer on each selected page at the precise coordinates you chose. The result is a native PDF text element — not an image — which means the quality is perfect regardless of zoom level or print output.
Six position options cover every common page numbering convention. Legal documents typically number pages at the bottom center; academic papers often use top right; books may use alternating top outside corners (handled by running the tool twice with different start and end page settings). The Custom format field gives you full control with {n} and {t} placeholders — so you can create formats like "– 3 –" or "Draft / Page 3 of 20".
Because everything runs locally in your browser, there are no file size limits imposed by a server, no waiting for uploads, and no concern about who has access to your document. Your file is read into memory, processed in microseconds, and the resulting PDF is handed directly back to you as a browser download. Nothing is ever transmitted over the network. If you need to change the page orientation before numbering, use our Rotate PDF tool first for perfect alignment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. The entire process runs in your browser using pdf-lib. Your file never leaves your device.
Can I add page numbers to only specific pages?
Yes. Open Advanced Options and set Start Page and End Page to apply numbering to a specific range. The rest of the document is untouched.
Can I start numbering from a value other than 1?
Yes. Use the Start Number field in Advanced Options to begin from any value — useful when your document continues from a previous file.
What number formats are available?
You can display: just the number (1, 2, 3), 'Page 1', 'Page 1 of 10', or a fully custom format using {n} for the page number and {t} for the total.
Does adding page numbers reduce PDF quality?
No. pdf-lib draws text as a native PDF text layer — no rasterization occurs. The existing page content is not re-encoded in any way.
Are Roman numerals supported?
Yes. Toggle Roman Numbers in Advanced Options to display i, ii, iii, iv… instead of 1, 2, 3…
