About This Tool

JPEG and JPG are the exact same image format — the only difference is the file extension. The JPEG extension came from the original 4-character DOS file system limit that forced the abbreviation to three characters, giving us .jpg. On modern Windows, Mac, and Linux systems both extensions are fully interchangeable and refer to the same compressed image codec developed by the Joint Photographic Experts Group.

Despite being identical under the hood, some platforms, applications, and web forms are particular about which extension they accept. Government portals, university application systems, HR software, and certain photo printing services will sometimes reject a file named photo.jpeg while happily accepting photo.jpg. This converter handles that rename instantly — and goes further by supporting a wide range of source formats.

Beyond renaming .jpeg files, this tool converts a broad set of image formats to .jpg: PNG (common for screenshots and web graphics), HEIC / HEIF (the default format from iPhone cameras since iOS 11), WebP (Google's modern web format), BMP, GIF, and TIFF. Batch upload lets you convert an entire folder's worth of photos in one click.

This tool is completely free to use with no file count limits, no account creation, and no subscription. You can convert as many images as you need. All processing happens locally in your browser using the Canvas API — your photos never leave your device and are never uploaded to any server. This makes it safe for sensitive images such as personal documents, ID photos, or private pictures.

Because conversion runs client-side, speed is limited only by your device's CPU. Modern browsers handle even large batches of high-resolution images in seconds. The output JPG quality defaults to high fidelity, preserving as much detail as possible while keeping file sizes practical. For each converted file, the tool shows the output file size so you can see exactly how large your new JPG will be before downloading.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are JPEG and JPG the same format?

Yes — JPEG and JPG are identical image formats. The only difference is the file extension (.jpeg vs .jpg). Some older Windows systems only supported 3-character extensions, which is why JPG became common.

Will converting JPEG to JPG reduce quality?

No. Since JPEG and JPG are the same format, there is no quality loss during file extension conversion. For other formats like PNG, conversion uses high-quality JPEG encoding (92% quality).

Can I convert HEIC photos from my iPhone?

Yes! Our tool supports HEIC and HEIF files commonly used by iPhones. Upload your iPhone photo and download it as a universally compatible JPG.

How many files can I convert at once?

There is no limit. You can add and convert as many files as you need — our tool processes them all in parallel, completely free.

Is my privacy protected?

Absolutely. All conversion happens directly in your browser. Your images are never uploaded to any server, so they remain 100% private and secure.
