Video Frame Grabber

Capture full-resolution stills from any video, or lay the whole clip out as a contact sheet.

How to Use

  1. 1. Upload a video, or drop it onto the page.
  2. 2. Scrub or step to the exact moment you want.
  3. 3. Capture the frame, or build a contact sheet of evenly spaced thumbnails.
  4. 4. Download individual frames or the whole sheet.

Getting a Clean Still

A frame captured here is copied from the decoded video at its native resolution — a 4K clip yields a 3840-pixel-wide image, not a scaled-down screenshot. Exporting PNG keeps it pixel-exact; exporting JPG re-compresses it, which is much smaller and usually indistinguishable on photographic footage but visibly soft around text and hard graphic edges.

Frame-accurate seeking is the one thing browsers do not really offer. Setting a position decodes to the nearest available point, which can sit a frame or two from the timestamp you asked for. The step buttons nudge by roughly one frame at 30 fps, which is close enough to walk onto the exact moment you want.

Contact sheets sample at the midpoint of each equal slice rather than at the slice boundaries. That small choice matters: sampling at the boundaries on a clip that opens or closes on black produces a sheet with a black tile at each end, which tells you nothing about the footage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does grabbing a frame reduce its quality?

Not if you export PNG. The frame is copied from the decoded video at its native resolution and written out losslessly, so it is exactly what the player shows. Choosing JPG re-compresses it, which is smaller but no longer pixel-exact.

What is a contact sheet for?

It lays evenly spaced frames out on one image, which is how you show the shape of a whole clip at a glance. Useful for picking a thumbnail, documenting footage, or checking that a long render came out right without scrubbing through it.

Why is the captured frame slightly different from where I paused?

Seeking lands on the nearest keyframe-decodable position rather than an arbitrary millisecond, so the grab can sit a frame or two from the exact time you asked for. Stepping frame by frame with the buttons avoids the guesswork.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. The browser decodes the video locally and frames are drawn to a canvas on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, and the tool keeps working offline once the page has loaded.

Should I export PNG or JPG?

PNG for anything you will edit further, or for screen recordings and footage with text and flat graphics. JPG for photographic frames you just want to share, where the file is several times smaller and the difference is hard to see.
