Hash Generator Online

Generate MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, SHA-512 hashes of any text. Free, private, browser-based.

How to Use

  1. 1. Paste or type your text in the input field.
  2. 2. Toggle Uppercase if you need hex in capitals.
  3. 3. Click Generate Hashes.
  4. 4. All 5 hash formats (MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, SHA-512) appear simultaneously.
  5. 5. Click Copy next to any hash to copy it.

About This Tool

A cryptographic hash function takes any input text and produces a fixed-length output (the "hash" or "digest"). Even a tiny change to the input—like adding a space—produces a completely different hash. This property is called the avalanche effect.

MD5 produces a 128-bit (32-character hex) hash. Once the gold standard, MD5 is now considered cryptographically broken for security purposes due to collision vulnerabilities discovered in the 2000s. It's still used for file integrity checks where security isn't critical.

SHA-1 produces a 160-bit (40-character hex) hash. Deprecated for most security applications since 2017, SHA-1 is still seen in legacy systems. Browsers no longer accept SSL certificates signed with SHA-1.

SHA-256 is part of the SHA-2 family and produces a 256-bit (64-character hex) hash. It's considered cryptographically secure and is used in Bitcoin, TLS certificates, code signing, and most modern security protocols. It's the recommended choice for most applications.

SHA-384 and SHA-512 produce 384-bit and 512-bit hashes respectively. They offer higher security margins and are used in high-security environments. SHA-512 is computationally efficient on 64-bit platforms.

All SHA hashing in this tool uses the browser's native crypto.subtle Web Crypto API — the same engine your browser uses for HTTPS. MD5 is implemented in pure JavaScript since the Web Crypto API does not support MD5. Your text never leaves your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a hash function?

A hash function converts any input into a fixed-length string of characters. The same input always produces the same hash, but even a tiny change in input produces a completely different hash.

What is MD5 used for?

MD5 was widely used for checksums and data integrity verification. It is no longer considered cryptographically secure for passwords, but is still useful for file integrity checks.

What is SHA-256?

SHA-256 is part of the SHA-2 family and is considered cryptographically secure. It's used in Bitcoin, SSL certificates, code signing, and most modern security applications.

Can a hash be reversed?

Cryptographic hashes are one-way functions. You cannot mathematically reverse them. However, common passwords can be looked up in precomputed rainbow tables, so always use salted hashing for passwords.

Is my data safe when using this tool?

Yes. All hashing is performed entirely in your browser. Your text is never sent to any server. The tool uses the browser's built-in Web Crypto API for SHA algorithms.
