How to Use
- 1. To encode: Select the "File → Base64" tab, drag & drop your file or click Browse. The base64 output appears automatically.
- 2. Click Copy to copy the base64 string to clipboard.
- 3. To decode: Select the "Base64 → File" tab, paste the base64 string.
- 4. Enter the desired output filename (with extension, e.g., "image.png").
- 5. Click Download Decoded File to download the binary file.
About This Tool
Base64 is a binary-to-text encoding scheme that represents binary data using 64 printable ASCII characters (A–Z, a–z, 0–9, +, /). It increases the data size by about 33% but makes binary data safe to transmit over text-based protocols.
Base64 encoding is commonly used to embed images in HTML or CSS (data URIs like data:image/png;base64,...), encode file attachments in emails (MIME), transmit binary data in JSON APIs, and store binary data in databases or configuration files that expect text.
This tool supports encoding any file type — images (JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP, SVG), documents (PDF, Word), audio, video, and more. The encoding is performed using the browser's native FileReader.readAsDataURL() API, which reads the file as a data URL and extracts the base64 portion.
For decoding, the tool takes a base64 string, decodes it to binary using atob(), and triggers a download using the Blob API. You specify the output filename and extension so the browser knows how to handle the file.
All processing happens entirely in your browser. Your files are never uploaded to any server. The tool works offline once the page is loaded. Large files (over 50MB) may cause the base64 output to be very large, which could impact browser performance.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Base64 encoding?
Base64 is a binary-to-text encoding scheme that represents binary data using 64 printable ASCII characters. It's used to safely transmit binary files (images, PDFs, etc.) over text-based protocols like email or JSON APIs.
What file types can I convert?
Any file type works — images (JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP), PDFs, text files, audio, video, and more. The tool converts the raw binary data to base64, regardless of file type.
What is the maximum file size?
The tool works entirely in the browser using the FileReader API. For very large files (over 50MB), the base64 output may be too large to display. For typical use cases, files up to 10MB work smoothly.
How do I decode a Base64 string back to a file?
Switch to the Decode tab, paste your base64 string, enter the desired output filename (with extension), and click Download. The tool converts the base64 back to binary and triggers a download.
Is my file private?
Yes. The FileReader API processes everything locally in your browser. Your file is never uploaded to any server. Close the tab and all data is gone.
