About This Tool

SQL formatting (also called SQL beautification) is the process of restructuring a SQL query to be human-readable by adding consistent indentation, line breaks, and capitalized keywords. Formatted SQL is significantly easier to read, review, debug, and maintain than unformatted SQL.

When working with ORMs, query builders, or copied queries from database tools, you often receive SQL as a single long line. This formatter breaks it into logical sections: the SELECT clause, FROM clause, JOIN clauses, WHERE conditions, GROUP BY, ORDER BY, and more — each on its own line with appropriate indentation.

The formatter capitalizes all SQL keywords (SELECT, FROM, WHERE, JOIN, etc.), making it immediately clear which parts are SQL structure and which are your identifiers and values. This is a widely adopted SQL style convention that improves readability.

All formatting happens in your browser using JavaScript. Your SQL queries — which may contain sensitive table and column names, or business logic — never leave your device. The tool works offline once loaded.

You may also find our JSON Formatter, Regex Tester, and Cron Generator helpful.

Frequently Asked Questions

What SQL dialects are supported?

This tool formats standard SQL keywords that are common across MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite, and SQL Server. It focuses on readability rather than dialect-specific syntax.

Does formatting change my SQL logic?

No. Formatting only adds whitespace and newlines. It does not change the SQL keywords, table names, column names, or any logic in your query.

Why should I format my SQL?

Formatted SQL is much easier to read, review, and debug. When sharing queries with colleagues or in code reviews, well-formatted SQL communicates intent clearly and reduces errors.

Can I format very large SQL files?

This tool is best for individual queries. For large SQL files with many queries, consider using a dedicated SQL formatter in your database IDE (e.g., pgAdmin, DBeaver, or DataGrip).

Does this tool send my SQL anywhere?

No. All formatting happens entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your SQL queries never leave your device.
